You can ignore it, but it doesn’t change the fact that all of this happens on a massive scale. It’s happening as you read this.

    • OHS NOES YOU DRANK THE PETA KOOLAID ZOMG

    • LOLZRS!

I don’t really have a problem with eating meat as long as it’s SOLE. It’s not widely available, so I’ll have to eat vegetarian most of the time. I had read about what happens at CAFOs before, but finally seeing video of it really seals the deal for me.

Speaking of food…I’m thinking about joining a CSA. Would you recommend any particular ones around here?

    • The thing with meat is that it’s really, really easy in Madison to get ethically raised product. All you need to do is go to the farmer’s markets and get to know the farmers. Nearly all of them will be glad to describe, in detail, how they raise and process their product. My guess is they’d be willing to let you come visit and check up on the animals too.

I don’t know what “SOLE” is.

As for CSAs, there are a multitude available in the area. If you’re into root vegetables, go to Harmony Valley Farm (they also have the longest CSA, that runs from April to January). We’re currently members of three – a spinach-only CSA that runs over the winter, a fruit CSA that runs from September to December (with delicious, local pears and apples!), and a summer vegetable CSA through Blue Moon Community Farm.

Anyway, if you want more info, check out MACSAC, which has a decent list of the locally available CSAs (though not all of them, it should be noted).

Otherwise, drop me a line. Lee and I are pretty much experts on the local food scene.

    • SOLE = Sustainable, Organic, Local, Ethical

      Thanks for the CSA tips!
